The Poor Image Assignment: Source Files

Here are some of the source files that I have compiled for the Poor Image Assignment. These files are derived from old personal videos of my childhood, including the orchestral arrangements that I was formerly a part of. These videos have been transformed into mp3 files and shared with you, the audience, via Google Drive links.  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B4AyZxVkOMDJ-RDYSaDWtcQQb6K8YjPs/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/18RLjmmS6RVo12qw_iqYP7X1SD-hCWScv/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DSOXOWR3AUMdfoD_zDZzWjKXv2JJgT9l/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Xao5WmSbDyy_eLp8KeKRkFHpmjGu25k6/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1DvObHSqcfY2JU79kcLKwKkZ6bnPcD5WK/view?usp=sharing

The Poor Image Assignment: Inspiration

Research for this project consisted of searching for media I enjoy and what I thought was relevant to my project. Below is a YouTube link to Jim Morrison's Album, An American Prayer,  which inspired me to create something in a similar field. Reflecting on the songs, I experimented with spoken word in my project and adopted anecdotal storytelling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1H7nNtiZIc&list=OLAK5uy_nhqYrMpfi9vBYp0vkXflvwMdOBtMPj3fQ    Another source of inspiration was contemporary artist Catherine Sullivan's installation, The Chittendens, a striking project of Sullivan's that encapsulates a theatrical presentation with avant-garde visuals and, more so, uncanny dialogue. Layers of cinema are projected on top of one another, giving the project an ephemeral aesthetic that I wanted to aim towards in my own project.  “The Chittendens” — Art21

The Poor Image Assignment

The Poor Image Assignment  Here is the Google Drive link to the product of my Assignment: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BXUsejzZCkMb7SnGCq4OmllbW3r_Qmcs/view?usp=drive_link  The idea of inevitable transformation in Hito Steyerl's essay "In Defence of the Poor Image" is a key theme I explored in my own work. Inspired by Steyerl's idea of never-ending transformation in media, my work expands on that and integrates it with my own growth as a human being.  Growth defines what my audio intends to capture. Compiled of audios of myself--young, naive, and infatuated by wonder--I have created an honest work that is my upbringing. The research that went into the source files began with a silly idea of scouring old videos of my youth posted from my parents' and my own Facebook accounts. I saw moments of who I was back then, and realized how similar I was then to who I am now. What I found strange, however, is how all of these seemingly core memories have just faded into o...

First Post! First Assignment: Intro

For the poor image assignment, I have decided to work with audio. My process will be to layer a variety of distorted audio files; distortion by repeatedly playing an audio file into another recording device until the product is satisfyingly unintelligible.  The image below is of my portable karaoke machine. I will be using it to record my voice, play, or create sound effects. The machine comes with additional features, like voice changers, that further distort the sounds it amplifies, so it will be interesting to experiment with all the possibilities.   The content I will be reciting may be subject to change, a mix of several materials, such as old voice recordings, gibberish, sound effects, song lyrics, speeches, anecdotes, and whatever I can think of. But the thing to ground everything will be to just have fun with it and see where it takes me.
