HERE'S WHAT I'VE BEEN UP TO:

Digital Painting: "SIREN"

Digital Painting: "Siren", Reflection  "Siren"     For this project, my goal was to create a piece that I had connected with. Themes of love, sexuality, and elegance were at play here, and I wanted to paint those feelings. The Art Nouveau Style heavily inspired this work. I played with whiplash curves, botanical and natural motifs, and boldly showed intimacy and femininity. Art Nouveau painter, Alphonse Mucha and his painting, Summer (1896), would be the main influence for this entire piece. This painting would become a master study of what Art Nouveau was.      My understanding of the assignment was to appropriate some photos and incorporate them into the work. My understanding of appropriation was the process of using one or several images and including them in the painting. According to Merriam-Webster, the act of appropriation is "to take or make use without authority or right".  I labelled 'reference photos' into the category of appropriation,...

Digital Painting (2/2)

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ART NOUVEAU AND ART DÉCO     The research conducted for this process comes from art styles that have been in my mind for a while, which were the styles of Art Nouveau and Art Deco.      Art Nouveau and Art Deco are cousins in that they both responded to the shifting culture of the world around them. Art Nouveau:     Popularized in the 1890s-1910s, Art Nouveau responded to the turn of the century. Art Nouveau was prominent in countries like the USA, Spain, Britain, and especially France. After a century of devastation and war, like the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War, people looked in directions where progress felt real. Art Nouveau is associated with the term "belle epoch", or beautiful era, and after the world suffered countless wars of the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution would come into frame, corroding nature itself. The demand for sanctuary was greater than ever, and Art Nouveau became the sense of utopia t...

4 Iterations of my Concept For this assignment, I wanted to use themes I was already comfortable with, such as nature and bodies and incorporate them into digital painting, a medium I'm not so comfortable with, especially with software as complex as Photoshop. Here are four sketches of what I may or may not do: Here are some iterations of the concept I have decided to do: The iterations consist of me playing with the background and colour scheme, as well as the position of the feet. I wanted everything to be intentional and not lose the compositional integrity.

Photobook Sequence: Buggin' Out (Digital copy)

Buggin' Out: Reflection Buggin' Out is the sequence photobook that erupted from concepts of posing the body and experimenting with how the camera can capture motion. In this photobook, a primary goal of mine was to capture likeness and understand what made Eadward Muybridge's motion photography so profound. Another goal was to personalize this book to put a part of my spirit into the work--making this project a whole hell of a lot of fun to create.  Although not obvious at first, the sequence aspect of this work is the duration of exposure and how it gets progressively lengthier after every photograph, creating disorienting visuals and neat effects. This is the cover page of the entire book. The process behind the image stemmed from using an LED projector that was dispersed throughout the room. Additionally, the projector has mechanics letting the light show rotate around the room.  To break from the sequence inside the book, this photograph was taken with a longer expos...

Photobook Sequence: Buggin' Out (Physical copy)

Buggin' Out Physical Book Showcase Because I did not have my prints ready for the binding workshop, I had to DIY the hole punching process with a pin and a wooden skewer. Sadly, the holes were not as clean, but it got the job done...
