Photobook Sequence: Buggin' Out (Digital copy)

Buggin' Out: Reflection Buggin' Out is the sequence photobook that erupted from concepts of posing the body and experimenting with how the camera can capture motion. In this photobook, a primary goal of mine was to capture likeness and understand what made Eadward Muybridge's motion photography so profound. Another goal was to personalize this book to put a part of my spirit into the work--making this project a whole hell of a lot of fun to create.  Although not obvious at first, the sequence aspect of this work is the duration of exposure and how it gets progressively lengthier after every photograph, creating disorienting visuals and neat effects. This is the cover page of the entire book. The process behind the image stemmed from using an LED projector that was dispersed throughout the room. Additionally, the projector has mechanics letting the light show rotate around the room.  To break from the sequence inside the book, this photograph was taken with a longer expos...

Photobook Sequence: Buggin' Out (Physical copy)

Buggin' Out Physical Book Showcase Because I did not have my prints ready for the binding workshop, I had to DIY the hole punching process with a pin and a wooden skewer. Sadly, the holes were not as clean, but it got the job done...

Photobook Series: IDEALISM

IDEALISM   My intention with my series book was to practice basic Photoshop editing tools before focusing more energy into my sequence photobook. Although the painting tool was what I primarily used for this book, secondhand techniques such as flipping, liquifying, and lassoing became essential for some of these edits. Using blending layers for the last page was a monumental discovery that I had used oh so much in my sequence photobook. I titled my series book, "Idealism", because I wanted to loosely expand on the notion of institutionalized photos and how the idea of insecurities and the need to look presentable come into play. These edits present to the viewer what ideals in appearance may look like: masculinity, femininity, symmetry, cosmetic, normalcy, doll-like, transient, exaggerated and abundant--all for the ideal face, whatever that may be.

AESTHETICS INFLUENCED BY MUSIC     As I shoot and edit photos for my sequence photobook, a pervasive pattern for me when I work on a piece of art is the influence of music and how it affects the aesthetics--or the vibes--of my artwork. This time, a mix of jazz hip-hop, symphonic rock, and alternative metal had possessed my photobook.  Take a listen to these three albums! Release of an Oath -- The Electric Prunes Release of an Oath is a symphonic rock album released in 1968. It caught my eye with its album cover. Like Muybridge's "The Horse in Motion", the cover art of this album mimics a streamlined composition that I thought was relevant to my photobook. Although the music itself doesn't have as much of an influence on my photobook compared to the other two albums, I think the ghostly nature of the album is an element I will be considering. The Low End Theory -- A Tribe Called Quest The Low End Theory was released in 1991. It is a jazz hip-hop album that celebrates...

Photobook (2/3)

Eadward Muybridge and Exposure     After a conversation with David, he introduced me to Eadward Muybridge and sparked the idea of playing with the duration of exposure.      Eadward Muybridge was a photographer, born in the 1830s, and died in 1904. He was prolific for his photographs of landscapes of the Yosemite Valley, taken in 1867. With camera technology being so primitive at the time, he would climb the mountains with heavy equipment and would use the process of what is known as collodion wet-plate photography. Collodion photography was a technique in the mid 19th century that utilized glass to create negative images, which allowed photographers to print images on albumen paper.      In 1872, the former governor of California, Leland Stanford, placed a bet of 25000 dollars on whether a horse's 4 hooves, at one point, would simultaneously lift off the ground as it galloped. Stanford commissioned Muybridge for photographic studies. Photog...
